Badmouthing Your Ex

Why You Should Stop Badmouthing Your Ex

A favorite pastime for those enduring divorce is to sit around with our besties and Trash The Ex.  Badmouthing your ex feels good! The ex-related expletives bring a sense of purpose or confidence.  Perhaps the practice offers a sense of release so that one can proceed with a clearer head.  Either way, it feels good to vent among those who are closest and offer support. I get it.  And I’ve done it.  But I don’t condone it.  At least, not to excess. Let me explain:  I could write an entire blog post about what a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad person […]

Healing Happens Within

Healing Happens Within

Healing is something that happens on the inside. At least at first. A few weeks ago, I cut my finger while slicing a sweet potato. Immediately, I wrapped the digit with gauze and applied pressure until the bleeding stopped. Stopping the blood flow was the first step in my body getting back to normal. But times are changing (thankfully). These days, couples can be more creative when they divide their assets. There are various processes to choose from. There are different ways to share the home. Sometimes exes even continue to vacation together with their children and second spouses. And yes, there are new options to celebrate a divorce. For many years, I’ve been a proponent of divorce ceremonies: […]

Death and Divorce

I didn’t think I’d spend my Friday morning deeply contemplating the similarities between death and divorce. But that’s what happened… After yoga class, I scanned my Instagram feed and found a screen shot posted by Hello Divorce. The image featured comments from a Facebook post, and the authors clearly do not approve of ending a marriage. In the comments under the image, Modern Split chimed in to say that they too have been criticized for their work. I can relate as well. It’s not uncommon for those of us who work in the divorce field to come under fire from […]
