Holiday Unhappiness

The Holiday Season has officially begun.

I realize that along with all that talk of peace and goodwill, this time of year can bring tremendous sadness.  Many of us are missing loved ones we’ve lost… perhaps finances are tight and the stockings won’t be stuffed so full this year… those recently separated are struggling to work around obsolete traditions…

In light of this fact, I’d like to share another of my favorite poems.  I discovered it a few years ago in my Daily Zen calendar and it now hangs in multiple locations throughout my domicile, just to remind me…

Although the wind
blows terribly here,
the moonlight also leaks
between the roof planks
of this ruined house.
-Izumi Shikibu

  1. Holidays are NOT easy divorced, especially if sometimes the kids are with the ex…but for me, they were pretty tense married! Christmas in particular felt rough and I would get a knot in my stomach. Some of it was my own crap, never feeling satisfied, a house full of mess and step-daughter issues. But, ex contributed his crap for sure. I will say this, without him, when it is just my kids and me and maybe my family, it just feels great to be thankful, grateful AND satisfied.
