Stories Influence Circumstances

Tonight, I mentioned to my chiropractor that I often slouch. He told me to stop saying that. It was yet another reminder of how much we are affected by the stories we tell. Perhaps I won’t slouch so much if I stop describing myself that way.

I wrote about this topic in my last post, and I think it’s worth expounding upon: Our circumstances are the products of the stories we tell ourselves. We can alter or reinforce our feelings with these stories. And yet, how often do we check in with those tales to verify their validity and make a determination about whether or not a particular story is appropriate for where we want to go in life?

Divorce Vows

It’s been nearly three years since the first time I wrote about divorce ceremonies. I still haven’t given up hope that this ritual will one day be a normal part of our culture— especially given the existence of companies such as A NEW DAWNe.

Earlier this week, I found this quote from Mahatma Gandhi and I shared it on my Facebook page:

“I offer you peace. I offer you love. I offer you friendship. I see your beauty. I hear your need. I feel your feelings.”

My Broken Heart, One Year Later…

On November 20, 2011, I was happily coupled with my best friend and one of the greatest loves of my life. We lived in a house that we’d chosen together to be Our Home. I enjoyed positive and/or close relationships with his parents and his sons. Our family was my highest priority.

The episode reached its climax when Ex-BF confessed that he’d been unfaithful to me a few years earlier. He went on to explain that the Other Woman had recently come back into his life and was pressuring him to pick up where they left off.

Love, Loss, Life… Reflections From The Shore

Last month, BullyGirl and I took a vacation to Cape Cod, my favorite place on Earth. I’ve been taking guests there since the late ’80s, but it wasn’t until Ex-BF accompanied me that someone else loved the place almost as much as I do. It was with him that I made the best memories and felt the most at peace.

One of my intentions for the October voyage was to re-tread all of “our” places with my solo sneakers. Like my home, I had to make The Cape mine once again.

Let Go: Nature’s Wisdom…

Hurricane Sandy passed through my area yesterday and last night. As individuals and businesses made preparations, I found the following snippet in my Facebook News Feed:

“Let the power of the winds carry away all that is no longer serving you.”
What a beautiful perspective! While we were all rushing to stockpile water and take cover, Mother Nature was reminding us to focus on what’s important and prepare to let go of what isn’t.
