Divorce on TV: My Favorite Shows

Divorce on TV

The subject of Divorce is becoming more prominent in our culture, and that makes me very happy. If you’re a regular reader, you know that I want this issue to be an accepted Life Event. In order to better support those in the process, we (the collective “we”) need to change our minds, our hearts and our words. Until recently, this has been a difficult task because the topic has been veiled by shame. Not anymore. These days, we’re seeing more and more Divorce on TV.

Following is a quick summary of some of my favorite TV shows that highlight divorce. If you’re looking for a way to spend your down time this Holiday Season, you might want to check out…

Divorce

What it’s about:  After years of unhappiness and recent infidelity, Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Robert (Thomas Haden Church), parents of 2 children, decide to separate. The show chronicles their journey as they test various strategies through the process, break the news to family and try to figure out how to function as they move forward, separately.

Why I love it:  This show is real. It’s raw. At times it’s heartbreaking; other times it’s painfully comedic.

Issues Addressed:  Infidelity, The Dance of Separation, Co-Parenting, Shame/Blame and the Escalation of Ugliness, External Input, Legal Strategies, Hope and Dreams for the Future

Airs on:  HBO, Season 1 is complete.

Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce

What it’s About:  Wealthy LA Author Abbey McCarthy (Lisa Edelstein) becomes a public icon after embracing her divorce as a fun and empowering event.

Why I love it:  It’s fun and sexy.  It’s like 90210 for grownups.

Issues Addressed:  Personal Freedom, Dating, Friendships, Hookups, Sex-with-the-Ex, Letting Go, Blending Families

Airs on:  Bravo, Season 3 begins in January

Grace and Frankie

What it’s About:  It turns out that, after several decades, Grace (Jane Fonda) and Frankie’s (Lilly Tomlin) husbands are more than just partners in law.  This new development helps to forge a bond between women who are otherwise polar opposites.

Why I love it:  It’s sweet and mature, yet still a little goofy.

Issues Addressed:  Gray Divorce, Gay Marriage, Adult Children, Friendship, Post-Marital Bonds, Family, Dating

Airs on:  Netflix, Season 2 is complete

I know this isn’t a complete list of all the options when it comes to Divorce on TV. There are other shows out there that I’ve yet to sample. Do you have any suggestions for me to check out? Post a comment and let me know 🙂
