Saturday’s Song: You Don’t Own Me

Happy Saturday!  I was hoping to get this published a little earlier today, but I ended up having a slightly busy yet wonderfully enjoyable morning… which only means that my afternoon is going to be all about my To-Do-List.  The first item on that list is today’s song, which I was reminded of while perusing the Facebook Page for Everyone Gets Divorced (If you haven’t yet visited that site and you don’t mind making light of divorce, it’s worth a click.  It makes me smile every time).

Initially, I searched YouTube for a video of Lesley Gore singing her song, You Don’t Own Me.  I found what I was looking for, but the video reminded me too much of Judith O’Dea in the original Night Of The Living Dead (the scariest movie ever made!)… so, I kept looking until I found something that wouldn’t cause me to be afraid to sleep with the lights out.

The First Wives’ Club has to be my all-time favorite breakup movie.  Many can relate as it addresses several ways in which a relationship can go wrong.  I appreciate how the wives got even without going completely psycho (for the record, I wouldn’t have done what they did… but that’s why there was no movie about my civil divorce).  I identify with the tears and the laughter and the strength… Mostly, I love the message about finding your independence, moving on and putting all that energy toward a worthy cause.

Today, I hope you remember how wonderfully awesome you are, just as you are. Let no one try to change you or drag you down…

Lyrics:  You Don’t Own Me   (John Madara and David White)

You don’t own me, I’m not just one of your many toys
You don’t own me, don’t say I can’t go with other boys

And don’t tell me what to do
And don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display, ’cause

You don’t own me, don’t try to change me in any way
You don’t own me, don’t tie me down ’cause I’d never stay

Oh, I don’t tell you what to say
I don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

And don’t tell me what to do
Oh don’t tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don’t put me on display

I don’t tell you what to say
Oh don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
