I think we need to start holding Divorce Ceremonies. Like in that movie, Under the Tuscan Sun, when Diane Lane’s marriage falls apart her friends get her a cake and they say “weddings begin with cake and they should end with cake too.” (or something to that effect). I love that!! And I want to take it a few steps further.

Last evening, I had the extreme pleasure of attending an “Evening of Support, Information and a Vision for Your Future” in Westport, CT. Featured speakers included Susan Filan (attorney/mediator), Jessica Bram (author: Happily Ever After Divorce: Notes of a Joyful Journey) and Lili Vasileff (divorce financial planner). They were joined by therapists Nancy Wergeles and Elizabeth Crossfield, who head up a local divorce support group. The room was full of people seeking resources to guide them in their journey. Today, I met a man who told me his Horrid Divorce Story- the typical male version (she ‘took him to the cleaners’). But he survived! And when it was all over, he proudly displayed his divorce decree at his office. And then, he was asked to take it down. Why??? If divorced people can’t show off the universal symbol of their status, then all those married people should leave their rings at home. It’s only fair, right?
